What is nystatin
Nystatin is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections, by disrupting the structure of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell death primarily those caused by Candida species. It is commonly prescribed for infections of the mouth (oral thrush), throat, skin, and intestines.
How do I use Nystatin?
- 1mL (100,000 units) suspension dropped into the mouth four times a day for seven days
- Continuing for 48 hours after lesions have resolved up to 7 days of treatment.
- Administer the medicine after food or drink; advise individual not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after using the suspension.
- Swish the suspension around the mouth; the suspension should be kept in contact with the affected area
What are the side effects
Nystatin is generally well-tolerated, especially since it is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream when used orally or topically. However, like any medication, it can cause side effects.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain or upset
- Mild mouth irritation
