What is oral thrush?

Oral thrush, also known as oral candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast in the mouth. It is more common in infants, older adults, people with weakened immune systems, or those using antibiotics, inhaled steroids, or dentures. Treatment typically includes antifungal medications, good oral hygiene, and addressing underlying causes to prevent recurrence.

What are the symptoms of oral thrush?

  • White, creamy patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, or throat
  • Redness, irritation, or soreness in the affected areas
  • Pain or discomfort while eating or swallowing
  • Cotton-like feeling in the mouth
  • Loss of taste or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Cracking or redness at the corners of the mouth (angular cheilitis)
  • Slight bleeding if the patches are scraped or rubbed
  • Dry mouth or a feeling of roughness on the tongue

What is nystatin

Nystatin is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections, by disrupting the structure of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell death primarily those caused by Candida species. It is commonly prescribed for infections of the mouth (oral thrush), throat, skin, and intestines.

How do I use Nystatin?

  • 1mL (100,000 units) suspension dropped into the mouth four times a day for seven days
  • Continuing for 48 hours after lesions have resolved up to 7 days of treatment.
  • Administer the medicine after food or drink; advise individual not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after using the suspension.
  • Swish the suspension around the mouth; the suspension should be kept in contact with the affected area

What are the side effects

Nystatin is generally well-tolerated, especially since it is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream when used orally or topically. However, like any medication, it can cause side effects.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach pain or upset
  • Mild mouth irritation
