Travel sickness (motion sickness) is nausea, sweating, cold clamminess and sometimes vomiting caused by travel in cars, coaches, boats, planes or virtual-reality headsets. The brain receives mismatched messages: the inner ear senses motion while the eyes may see a still cabin, or the other way around.
It is more common in children, in people who get migraine, and on boats or winding roads. Symptoms often ease when the journey stops. It is different from food poisoning (which usually includes diarrhoea and fever) and from sudden spinning vertigo with hearing loss, which needs medical assessment.

How to take or use the treatment
Always read the patient information leaflet, including how long before departure to take the first dose. The steps below are general.

Take the first dose before you travel
Many tablets need 1 to 2 hours (sometimes longer) to work. After vomiting, absorption is poor — prevention is the point.

Repeat only as the leaflet allows
Do not stack hyoscine and a sedating antihistamine unless a clinician has designed that plan. More tablets will not cancel a ferry already in rough sea and can be dangerous.

Arrange a non-drowsy driver
If you are the driver, you cannot take a sedating option. Choose a different method of travel or a different person to drive.

Apply patches correctly if prescribed
Stick to dry, hairless skin behind the ear as directed, wash hands, and do not cut patches. Used patches still contain medicine — fold and dispose of them safely away from children and animals.

Dry mouth and drowsiness are expected with several of these medicines. Inability to pass urine, severe confusion, and collapse are not.
Seek urgent help (A&E) if
- You cannot pass urine after an anticholinergic travel tablet — seek urgent care.
- Severe confusion, hallucinations, or collapse after a dose — go to A&E.
- A child has swallowed extra tablets or a used patch — go to A&E; take the pack with you.
- Chest pain, a first seizure, or a sudden severe headache during travel — go to A&E; do not assume it is motion sickness.
Contact a clinician or NHS 111 if
- You must drive and still need prevention — ask about non-sedating strategies; do not take a drowsy tablet and drive anyway.
- Glaucoma, prostate symptoms, or you take other sedating medicines — check before any hyoscine or sedating antihistamine.
- Vomiting continues after the journey with fever or diarrhoea — treat as possible infection and hydrate; seek NHS advice if you cannot drink.
- A child needs a dose — use a product licensed for their age and weight; a pharmacist can help if this service is not open.
