Hair Loss Treatment Online

Start hair loss treatment online for male pattern baldness. Clinicians can review finasteride or minoxidil, with discreet UK delivery if prescribed.

Introduction

Treatment overview

Male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common cause of gradual thinning at the crown or receding hairline. It is often hereditary and can be treated if started early enough.

Private Pharmacy Care offers a private consultation for clinically appropriate hair-loss medicines, such as finasteride and, where suitable, topical minoxidil as part of a plan.

Results take months, not days. Treatment usually needs to continue to maintain any benefit.

The condition

What is male-pattern hair loss?

Male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common reason men notice a receding hairline or thinning at the crown. Hair follicles become more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone made from testosterone. The hair shaft grows finer and the growth phase shortens until follicles produce little visible hair.

It usually runs in families and progresses gradually over years. It is different from sudden patchy loss (alopecia areata), shedding after illness or crash dieting (telogen effluvium), or scalp scarring. Those need a different assessment, often with a GP or dermatologist.

Private Pharmacy Care can review licensed medicines such as finasteride 1 mg and advise on topical minoxidil as part of a plan. A clinician decides if treatment is appropriate. Completing a consultation does not guarantee a prescription. Benefit is slow, usually judged over months, and generally lasts only while you continue treatment.

Symptoms

Symptoms of male-pattern hair loss

Typical male-pattern change is gradual thinning in a recognised shape, not sudden bald patches or a painful, scaly scalp. Photographs in similar light every few months are more reliable than daily mirror checks.

Causes

Causes of hair thinning

Androgenetic alopecia is driven by genetics and androgens. Other causes of shedding need ruling out if the pattern is atypical, you are unwell, or you are a woman seeking advice — oral finasteride for male-pattern loss is not the usual pathway we supply for women.

Benefits

Benefits and uses

Licensed medicines can slow further loss and, for some men, support thickening of existing hair. They work best on thinning hair rather than completely bald areas.

  • Targets a common cause

Finasteride reduces conversion of testosterone to DHT, a hormone involved in male-pattern hair loss.

  • Can be combined in a plan

A clinician may consider tablets, topical treatment, or both, depending on your history and preference.

  • Private and discreet

Consult from home. Approved medicines are delivered in plain packaging.

  • Reviewed for safety

We check medicines, prostate history, and other conditions before prescribing.

Eligibility

Eligibility

Hair-loss tablets used in this service are typically for adult men with male-pattern hair loss. They are not for use in pregnancy and are not usually supplied for women through this pathway.

May be suitable if

  • You are an adult man with male-pattern thinning or recession
  • You understand that benefit is gradual and ongoing treatment is usually needed
  • You can take a daily tablet as prescribed, if that option is chosen
  • You will tell us about sexual side effects, mood changes, or other concerns promptly

May not be suitable if

  • You are pregnant, could become pregnant, or are breastfeeding (finasteride can harm an unborn baby)
  • You are a woman seeking this particular oral treatment pathway
  • You have liver problems or an allergy to the proposed medicine
  • You want a guaranteed restoration of a fully bald scalp

A clinician decides whether treatment is appropriate. Completing a consultation does not guarantee a prescription.

How it works

How it works

Finasteride 1 mg is taken daily and lowers DHT. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp and may prolong the growth phase of hair. Shedding can temporarily increase when treatment starts. Photographs over 3–6 months are a fairer way to judge change than day-to-day looking.

  1. Complete a consultation

Answer a short, confidential questionnaire about your symptoms, medical history and current medicines.

  2. Clinician review

A UK-registered clinician reviews your answers to check the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

  3. Dispensing and delivery

If a prescription is issued, our pharmacy dispenses the medicine and sends it in discreet UK packaging.

  4. Support if you need it

Safety

Safety information

Women who are pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. Keep medicines away from children.

Tell us about mood, including depression or suicidal thoughts — stop the medicine and seek help if these occur, and contact us or NHS 111 / emergency services as appropriate.

  • Finasteride can affect PSA blood tests used in prostate checks — tell your GP you take it.
  • Do not donate blood while taking finasteride, and follow the interval in your leaflet after stopping.
  • This will not treat hair loss caused by illness, crash dieting, or some other medical conditions.
  • Read the leaflet before you start and keep it for reference.

Side effects

Side effects

Most men tolerate treatment. A small number report sexual side effects with finasteride. Topical minoxidil can irritate the scalp.

  • Reduced libido or erectile changes Uncommon but important. Contact us if this happens; do not ignore mood or sexual side effects.
  • Breast tenderness or lumps Rare. Seek medical advice promptly if you notice breast changes.
  • Temporary extra shedding Can happen in the first weeks as follicles cycle. Discuss with us if it is severe or prolonged.
  • Scalp irritation (minoxidil) Redness or itching at the application site. Stop and ask for advice if it is marked.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with a medicine. This page is general information and is not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.

Using treatment

How to take or use the treatment

Always read the patient information leaflet for the product you are given. The steps below are general. Consistency over months matters more than using extra doses.

How to take or use the treatment
  1. Take finasteride once daily if prescribed

Swallow the tablet at a regular time. Do not double up if you miss a day — take the next dose as usual unless the leaflet says otherwise.

  2. Apply minoxidil to a dry scalp if you use it

Use the amount stated, on thinning areas, and wash your hands. Let it dry before bed or hats. Keep it off the face to reduce unwanted facial hair.

  3. Give it time and keep going

A fair review is often at 3 to 6 months. Stopping usually leads to a return of the previous pattern of loss over the following months.

  4. Store tablets safely

Keep finasteride in the original pack, away from children and from anyone who is pregnant. Do not donate blood while taking finasteride, and follow the waiting period in the leaflet after you stop.

When to seek medical advice

Most men tolerate treatment. Sexual side effects, mood changes and breast symptoms need prompt advice. Hair loss itself is not an emergency, but some scalp and general symptoms are.

When to seek medical advice

Seek urgent help (A&E) if

  • Thoughts of self-harm or severe depression after starting finasteride — stop the medicine and go to A&E if you are in immediate danger, or use NHS urgent mental health services.
  • A painful, swollen breast, a breast lump, or nipple discharge — seek urgent medical assessment.
  • Severe allergic swelling of the face or breathing difficulty after a dose or after applying minoxidil — go to A&E.
  • Sudden widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin.

Contact a clinician or NHS 111 if

  • Reduced libido, erectile changes or other sexual side effects — contact us; do not ignore them.
  • Low mood, anxiety, or brain fog that started or worsened after treatment.
  • Marked scalp redness, pustules, or swelling from minoxidil, or shedding that is severe and prolonged.
  • Hair loss that is patchy, involves the eyebrows, or comes with fatigue or other whole-body symptoms — see a GP.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to see the answer. If you still need help, our team is ready to assist.

How long until I see a difference?

Often 3 to 6 months of consistent use. Stopping usually leads to a return of the previous pattern of loss over time.

Will I grow a full head of hair?

No treatment can promise that. The aim is usually to slow loss and improve the density of remaining hair.

Can women use this service for hair loss?

Oral finasteride for male-pattern hair loss is not appropriate in pregnancy and is not the usual option we supply for women. Contact us if you need signposting.

Do I have to use treatment forever?

Benefits typically last only while you continue. Your clinician can discuss a plan that fits you.

Is minoxidil a medicine I can buy anyway?

Some minoxidil products are available without a prescription. We can still advise as part of a reviewed plan if you use our consultation.
