Constipation Treatment Online

Request constipation treatment online from Private Pharmacy Care. A UK-registered clinician checks safety, with discreet UK delivery if a laxative is appropriate.

Introduction

Treatment overview

Constipation means passing stools less often than is normal for you, or stools that are hard, dry, or difficult to pass. Diet, fluids, medicines, and some medical conditions all play a part.

We will review suitable laxatives after checking red flags such as blood, weight loss, or a sudden change in bowel habit.

The condition

What is constipation?

Constipation means opening your bowels less often than is normal for you, or passing stools that are hard, dry, pellet-like, or difficult to push out. You may get cramps, bloating, or a feeling of incomplete emptying. What is “regular” varies; every day is not a medical requirement.

Low fibre, too little fluid, inactivity, ignoring the urge to go, pregnancy, and medicines such as opioids, some antidepressants and iron are common contributors. A sudden lasting change in bowel habit, blood, or unexplained weight loss needs a GP, not another laxative.

Private Pharmacy Care may review a suitable laxative after checking red flags when this service is open. A clinician decides. Completing a consultation does not guarantee a prescription. Always read the patient information leaflet. Severe pain with vomiting and no passing of stool or wind can be obstruction and is an emergency.

Symptoms

Symptoms of constipation

Hard, infrequent stools are the core problem. Overflow diarrhoea (liquid stool leaking around a blockage) can be mistaken for a stomach bug. Do not ignore blood or black stools.

Causes

Causes of constipation

The bowel needs fibre, fluid, and time to respond to the urge. Slow transit, outlet problems, medicines and some diseases all play a part.

Benefits

Benefits and uses

Laxatives are chosen by type: bulk-forming, osmotic, stimulant, or stool softeners. The right class matters more than taking several at once.

  • Matched laxative type

A clinician can suggest an option that fits your symptoms and other medicines.

  • Habit advice

Fibre, fluids, and movement are still the foundation.

  • Medicine review

Opioids, some antidepressants, and iron can constipate — we will ask about these.

  • Red-flag screening

We will tell you when a GP two-week pathway is needed instead of a laxative.

Eligibility

Eligibility

Short-term constipation in adults without alarm symptoms may be suitable. Bowel obstruction symptoms are an emergency.

May be suitable if

  • Infrequent or hard stools for a limited period
  • You can increase fluids and fibre unless advised not to
  • You will not ignore blood, black stools, or severe pain
  • You can describe other medicines including opioids

May not be suitable if

  • Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and no passing of stool or wind — possible obstruction
  • Unexplained weight loss, rectal bleeding, or a sudden lasting change in bowel habit
  • You are already using multiple laxatives without review
  • Inflammatory bowel disease flare

A clinician decides whether treatment is appropriate. Completing a consultation does not guarantee a prescription.

How it works

How it works

Bulk-forming laxatives add stool bulk. Osmotic laxatives draw water into the bowel. Stimulants encourage bowel muscle activity and are usually short-term. Softeners help oil the stool. Overuse of stimulants can worsen the problem.

  1. Complete a consultation

Answer a short, confidential questionnaire about your symptoms, medical history and current medicines.

  2. Clinician review

A UK-registered clinician reviews your answers to check the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

  3. Dispensing and delivery

If a prescription is issued, our pharmacy dispenses the medicine and sends it in discreet UK packaging.

  4. Support if you need it

Questions after you start treatment? Contact the team and we will help you with next steps.

Safety

Safety information

Do not keep escalating laxatives if you have severe pain, swelling, or vomiting.

Blood in the stool or black tarry stools needs medical assessment, not another laxative.

  • Drink enough water, especially with fibre supplements and osmotic laxatives.
  • See a GP for persistent change in bowel habit, especially if you are over 40 or have a family history of bowel cancer.
  • Tell us if you take opioids.
  • Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with a medicine. This page is general information and is not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.

Side effects

Side effects

Wind, cramps, and urgency are common when a laxative starts working.

  • Bloating or wind Often settles. Reduce dose if advised.
  • Abdominal cramps More common with stimulant laxatives.
  • Diarrhoea Ease the dose and hydrate. Seek help if it is severe.
  • Nausea Usually mild.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with a medicine. This page is general information and is not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.

Using treatment

How to take or use the treatment

Always read the patient information leaflet for the laxative you are given. Classes work at different speeds. The steps below are general.

How to take or use the treatment
  1. Drink extra water with fibre and macrogol

Mix powders exactly as the sachet says. Not drinking enough can make bulk-forming laxatives worsen blockage.

  2. Give osmotic products time

Do not take extra sachets the same morning because nothing has happened yet, unless the leaflet for faecal loading says otherwise and a clinician has directed that plan.

  3. Use stimulants for the shortest time needed

Take senna or bisacodyl as directed, often at night for a morning result. Seek advice if you need them continuously.

  4. Do not ignore the urge

When the laxative works, go to the toilet. Delaying recreates the problem.

Safety netting

When to seek medical advice

Wind and cramps can occur when a laxative starts working. A blocked bowel and bleeding are different problems.

When to seek medical advice

Seek urgent help (A&E) if

  • Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and no passing of stool or wind, with a swollen abdomen — possible obstruction; go to A&E.
  • Black tarry stools or vomiting blood — emergency care.
  • You cannot pass urine, have a painful swollen belly, and feel very unwell.
  • Collapse, confusion, or a rigid abdomen.

Contact a clinician or NHS 111 if

  • Blood on the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, or unexplained weight loss — see a GP (2-week pathway if they are concerned).
  • Constipation lasting weeks despite a proper laxative trial, or you are using several products at once without a plan.
  • You take opioids, or you have Parkinson disease, MS, or a spinal injury — ask the team that manages those conditions.
  • New constipation in older age with confusion or you have stopped eating and drinking — seek prompt clinical review.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to see the answer. If you still need help, our team is ready to assist.

Is this service available now?

Yes. Start an online consultation. A pharmacist can already advise on many over-the-counter laxatives.

How quickly do laxatives work?

It depends on the type. Some take a day or two; stimulants often work faster. Follow the leaflet.

Is daily stimulant use safe?

Regular stimulant laxatives should be reviewed. They are not the first long-term plan for most people.

How much fibre should I eat?

Increase gradually with fluids. Sudden large amounts can worsen bloating.
