What is an allergy?
An allergy is an immune reaction to a trigger that does not bother most people. In the nose and eyes this is allergic rhinitis — seasonal (hay fever) or year-round (for example dust mites or pets). The skin may itch or swell. The gut and breathing can be involved in food or sting allergy.
Most remote consultations are for hay fever-type symptoms: sneezing, itch, and a blocked or runny nose. Anaphylaxis — sudden breathing difficulty, throat swelling, or collapse — is a medical emergency. Go to A&E and use an adrenaline pen if you have been prescribed one.

Sedating antihistamines affect driving and alcohol. Prefer a non-sedating option unless a clinician advises otherwise.
Worsening wheeze or chest tightness is an asthma issue — follow your action plan or seek urgent help.
- Go to A&E for throat swelling, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty.

Side effects
Side effects
Non-sedating antihistamines are usually well tolerated. Nasal sprays can dry the nose or cause spotting.
- Drowsiness Less common with newer tablets, but do not drive if you feel affected.
- Dry mouth Sip water. Tell us if it is severe.
- Dry nose or spotting Check spray technique. Persistent bleeding should be reviewed.
- Headache Usually mild.

How to take or use the treatment
Always read the patient information leaflet for any tablet, spray or drop you are given. The steps below are general.

Take antihistamines as directed
Once-daily products are usually taken at the same time. Do not exceed the dose. Avoid alcohol if you feel drowsy.

Use nasal spray with the right aim
Gently blow your nose, aim slightly outward, and sniff lightly. Start before your usual season if you can.

Limit decongestant sprays
A few days at most. Longer use often makes blockage worse.

Know the emergency signs
Throat swelling, collapse, or severe wheeze is an emergency. An antihistamine is not a substitute for adrenaline in anaphylaxis.
Safety netting
When to seek medical advice
Most hay fever-type allergy is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Airway swelling and asthma attacks are the exceptions.
Seek urgent help (A&E) if
- Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or sudden breathing difficulty — go to A&E.
- Collapse, a widespread rash with feeling extremely unwell, or you have needed adrenaline before and symptoms are returning.
- Blue lips, inability to speak in sentences, or you cannot be woken properly.
- A non-blanching rash with fever — go to A&E; this is not treated as allergy at home.
Contact a clinician or NHS 111 if
- Asthma is worse than usual, or you are using your reliever more often — follow your action plan and contact your GP or NHS 111.
- Symptoms last all year, or one side of the nose is blocked with bloody discharge — GP or ENT advice.
- You think you have a food or sting allergy that has never been assessed — see a GP; do not wait for a private antihistamine review.
- Pregnancy, glaucoma, or prostate symptoms — check which products are safer before you continue supermarket tablets long term.

Is this the same as hay fever?
Hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis, one common type of allergy. This page also covers year-round symptoms such as dust-mite allergy. We have a dedicated hay fever page if that is your main issue.
Can you treat food allergies online?
