Apply a thin layer to the cold sore 5 times a day. Start at the first tingling. Squeeze a small amount onto a clean fingertip or cotton bud. Wash hands afterwards.

Possible side effects
Topical aciclovir can cause mild burning, stinging, dryness or allergic skin reactions in some people.
- Mild burning or stinging Can occur when the cream is applied. Usually short-lived. Seek advice if it is severe.
- Dryness or flaking of the skin The treated area may feel dry. Moisturise carefully around (not over) the lesion if needed, as advised on the leaflet.
- Allergic skin reaction Stop and seek medical advice if you develop swelling, severe redness, or a widespread rash.
