How it works

How Zovirax cream works

Aciclovir in the cream interrupts HSV replication at the cold sore, helping to ease symptoms when applied early and often.

  1. Online consultation

Tell us about your cold sore symptoms, how often outbreaks occur, when they started, and any other medicines or allergies.

  2. Clinical review

A UK-registered clinician checks whether an antiviral option is appropriate and safe for you.

  3. If suitable, we dispense

Approved treatment is dispensed by our pharmacy and delivered discreetly, with clear directions for use.

  4. Start early

Antivirals work best when started as soon as the first tingling or symptoms appear. Follow the leaflet exactly.

Using treatment

How to use Zovirax cream tube

Apply a thin layer to the cold sore 5 times a day. Start at the first tingling. Squeeze a small amount onto a clean fingertip or cotton bud. Wash hands afterwards.

  1. Wash your hands

Clean hands before and after applying the cream.

  2. Apply five times a day

Cover the cold sore with a thin layer about five times daily while awake.

  3. Keep the tube clean

Avoid touching the tube nozzle directly on the sore if you can — use a clean fingertip or bud.

  4. Limit spread

Do not share the tube. Avoid kissing and sharing lip products until the sore has healed.
