Olopatadine is an antihistamine eye drop for allergic conjunctivitis. It helps prevent histamine release from mast cells and blocks histamine effects to ease itchy, watery or allergic eyes.

Who olopatadine may be for
For allergic eye symptoms from age 3, for up to 4 months, when eye drops are appropriate.
May be suitable if
- You are over 3 years with allergic conjunctivitis suitable for olopatadine
- You can use one drop in affected eyes twice daily for no longer than 4 months unless advised
- You will use effective contraception if of childbearing potential, as required with this medicine
- You have answered the consultation questions truthfully
May not be suitable if
- Under 3 years old
- Allergy to olopatadine or any drop ingredient (including sensitivity to benzalkonium chloride)
- You need urgent optometrist or medical care for severe eye pain, vision loss or infection
- Pregnancy planning without clinician advice — effective contraception is required while using olopatadine

Using treatment
How to use olopatadine 1mg/ml eye drops
One drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily. Maximum 4 months’ use. Vision may blur briefly after instillation — do not drive until clear.

Wash hands and instil
Place one drop in each affected eye twice daily. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye.

Expect brief blurring or stinging
Mild stinging can occur. Do not drive until vision is clear.

Limit duration
Do not use for longer than 4 months unless a clinician advises otherwise.

Seek further advice if needed
If there is no improvement within 72 hours, or symptoms worsen, speak to your GP or an optometrist.

Contains benzalkonium chloride which may cause eye irritation. Soft contact lenses: follow leaflet advice about removal timing.
Effective contraception is required in patients of childbearing potential while using olopatadine. Seek medical advice for severe adverse reactions.

Possible side effects
Common effects include headache, altered taste, eye pain or irritation, dry eye, nasal dryness and fatigue. Less common eye surface and eyelid effects are listed in the leaflet.
- Headache, altered taste or fatigue Common. Rest if needed. Seek advice if symptoms are severe.
- Eye irritation, pain, dryness or abnormal sensation Common local effects. Mild stinging on instillation can occur.
- Blurred vision after drops Vision may be blurred for a few minutes. Do not drive or operate machinery until your sight is clear.
- Less common eye effects Can include corneal changes, photophobia, eyelid swelling or redness. Seek optometrist or medical advice if the eye worsens.
