Introduction

About nitrofurantoin 50mg tablets

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat various lower urinary tract infections. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. The medicine stays in the body for about 4 to 5 hours and is then excreted in the urine.

This pack is a 3-day course of 50mg tablets. Treatment is only supplied after a UK-registered clinician reviews your consultation.

Benefits

Why people consider nitrofurantoin 50mg

Where it is clinically appropriate, a short antibiotic course can clear many uncomplicated lower UTIs. A clinician still decides whether this strength and schedule suit you.

  • Targets urinary bacteria

Nitrofurantoin concentrates in the urine, which makes it useful for many lower urinary tract infections.

  • Short 3-day course

A standard uncomplicated UTI course is often completed over 3 days when a clinician agrees it is suitable.

  • Four-times-daily tablets

Take one 50mg tablet four times a day (every 6 hours) for 3 days.

  • Clinician review before supply

Every request is checked against your symptoms, history and cautions before a prescription is issued.

  1. Take one tablet four times a day

Space doses about 6 hours apart for 3 full days.

  2. Swallow whole with food or milk

Food or milk helps absorption and can reduce stomach upset.

  3. Complete the course

Do not stop early because urine looks darker — that colour change is expected.

  4. Seek help if you are not improving

If after 3 days you still have symptoms, or they get worse, speak to your GP urgently.
