- You have diabetes
- You have severe kidney disease, a lung disorder, liver disorder, anaemia or vitamin B deficiency
- You have G6PD deficiency, porphyria, or a condition causing severe weakness
- You are allergic to nitrofurantoin

Nitrofurantoin is not suitable for people with diabetes, severe kidney disease, lung disorders, liver disorders, anaemia or vitamin B deficiency, G6PD deficiency, porphyria, conditions causing severe weakness, or allergy to this medicine.
Stop taking immediately and seek medical assistance if symptoms of a pulmonary reaction develop, such as cough, shortness of breath (dyspnoea), fever or chills.
Your urine may turn dark yellow or brown. This is normal and usually returns to normal after you finish. Do not stop the medication because of the colour change.
