ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive containing ulipristal acetate 30mg. It is designed to be taken within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, such as a condom break. It works by preventing or postponing release of an egg from the ovaries, which can stop fertilisation.
ellaOne is widely regarded as a highly effective emergency contraceptive pill when taken within five days, with the best results when taken as soon as possible. It should not be used while breastfeeding, should not be used as regular contraception, and does not protect against STIs.

How ellaOne works
ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate. It prevents or postpones ovulation so sperm are less likely to fertilise an egg. It works best when taken promptly and may not work if more than five days have passed. It will not stop a pregnancy if you have unprotected sex after taking it.

Possible side effects
Side effects can include headache, breast soreness, tiredness, light-headedness, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. You may also get spotting before your next period.
- Headache Rest and fluids may help. Seek advice if headaches are severe.
- Breast soreness Usually temporary. Tell us if it is severe or persistent.
- Tiredness or light-headedness Take care if you feel dizzy. Rest if needed.
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea If you vomit within three hours of taking ellaOne, seek advice — you may need another dose.
- Spotting before your next period Your next bleed may come early or late. Do a pregnancy test if your period is more than 7 days late, or if it is unusually light.
